Century City Criterium Race Report

Century City Race Report

It was a chilly start to the annual Century City Criterium, but that didn’t stop the cyclists from coming out and testing themselves around a tricky, technical circuit.  Racing started on the day with the kids, and unfortunately, as the event coincided with the Cape Town Cycle Tour children’s event, it wasn’t as well attended as we hoped it would be.  The kids who did take part thoroughly enjoyed their race.  The next event up was the “Club Race” with members of City Cycling Club mixing it up with racing Category 3’s and the ladies.  This preceded racing Category 2 which saw a fantastic turnout.  The racing was tight, with a few spills before we saw Ian Naude taking the win from Robert du Preez and Aran van Niekerk in second and third respectively.  Then it was time for the fast guys!  Racing Category 1 had a smaller field than expected due to the Cape Rouleur and Tour of Good Hope stage races starting the following day.  It made no difference though as the racing was HOT!  Halfway into the race, 3 riders broke away to chase down the title.  A crash on the final roundabout saw Carl Bonthuys win the race from Chrispin Fourie in second and William Hans, after hitting the deck, in third.  All in all a great day out at Century City.
